IB Exams or Olympics?

GIS student Nour El Eslam Mecherek, had more pressure on her shoulders than most of her classmates this year, as she balanced the pressures of intense training required to compete internationally in fencing and studying for her IB Diploma. Inspired by Tunisian Olympic fencer Ines Boubakri, Nour started fencing at just six years old; she has gone on to represent her country in World Cups, African Championships, Arab Games and the World Championships. Unfortunately, the IB World exams fell at the same time as the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers, meaning Nour was forced to choose between the Diploma she has worked so hard on, and the potential opportunity to be an Olympic athlete. Ultimately, Nour chose her education, with hopes for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles still very much alive. Nour will go on to study in one of the most selective law schools in the world, Université Panthéon Assas in Paris, where she will also continue fencing.
